VICTORY DAY CEREMONY – SUNDAY 14 AUGUST 2005

A memorial ceremony will take place at the Cenotaph in Chater Road, Central on Sunday 14 August 2005 to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the end of the Pacific War and the Liberation of Hong Kong from occupation. This event is organised by the Hong Kong Prisoners of War Association, assisted by the RHKR The Volunteers Association, and is to remember all of those who gave their lives in the defence of Hong Kong in 1941, died in the years of brutal captivity which followed or had their lives shortened as a result of that treatment.

The Hong Kong SAR Government will be represented by the Chief Secretary. The Honourable Mr Raymond Chan, the Canadian Minister of State (Multiculturism), is representing Canada. In addition, wreaths will be laid on behalf of Legco, the Judiciary, by the Consuls-General of Britain, Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, and the United States and on behalf of the Commissioner of Police. Representatives of veteran and ex-servicemen’s associations including the Prisoners of War, the World War II Veterans, the RHKR The Volunteers, the Royal British Legion Hong Kong Branch, the Hong Kong Ex-Servicemen, the British Army Aid Group, the Chindits, the Gunners Roll of Hong Kong, the Gurkhas and the Stanley Internees will lay wreaths.

Cadet Force Contingents on parade will be from the Hong Kong Adventure Corps, the Sea Cadet Corps and the Air Cadet Corps. They will be accompanied by the CAS Band and five other Uniformed Youth Groups from the CAS Cadets, St John Ambulance, The Red Cross, the Boy Scouts and the Road Safety Patrol.

The outline programme is:

1040 hours: Parade formed from Uniformed Youth Groups and the CAS Band Marches On
1050 hours: Officials, Consuls-General and Veterans form up
1050 hours: Arrival of the Chief Secretary
1100 hours: “Last Post” – by bugler
1101 hours: Two Minutes Silence
1103 hours: “Reveille” – by bugler
1104 hours: Laying of wreaths
1115 hours: Laying of flowers by individual veterans
1120 hours: National Anthem
1123 hours: Parade Marches off - Ceremony ends
