UK TAKES ON SIX-MONTH EU PRESIDENCY

The United Kingdom will take over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) tomorrow.

The Presidency rotates between the Member States of the EU every six months. The UK will hold the Presidency of the EU from 1 July 2005 to 31 December 2005.

The 25 Member States of the EU are Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and United Kingdom.

The UK will be taking over from Luxembourg. On 1 January 2006, Austria will assume the Presidency.
